Swayambhunath Stupa is the oldest stupa in Kathmandu and one of the oldest religious sites in Nepal. The historical landmark has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Swayambhunath, or the Monkey Temple as it is often called, is located on a hill west of Kathmandu and has a (large) main stupa surrounded by Hindu and Buddhist temples and monuments of cultural and historical significance.

Swayambhunath is stunningly beautiful and absolutely gorgeous. What’s more, the site offers a wonderful panorama of the capital. A must see for every traveler in Kathmandu.

According to legend, Kathmandu was once a large lake and the Swayambhu hill was born from a dream flower that grew in the middle of this lake. Swayambhu (Swayambhu literally means “self-made” / “self-made”) is believed to have arisen by itself. According to legend, Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom and knowledge, came on a journey from China to see and worship the roti; satisfied with its brilliance, he decided to cut his throat in Chobhar with his sword to bring out the lake and finally made Swayambhu accessible to all pilgrims.

Century. Swayambhunath is believed to have been founded by King Manadeva’s great-grandfather, King Vrsadeva. Other temples and shrines were built around the Stupa during the Licchavi period (400-750 BC).

• Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, is home to hundreds of monkeys. Swayambhua monkeys are known as “sacred monkeys”. This is because Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom and knowledge, grew his hair while climbing Swayambhu Hill; then he found lice and the lice turned into monkeys.

Lhosar is one of the most important festivals of Swayambhu. The festival celebrates the Buddhist New Year (“Lo” means “new” and “Sar” means “year”). It usually falls in February.

The structure of the Swayambhunath Stupa is very representative. Here are some basic details about the structure of the stupa:

• The golden tower has thirteen golden discs representing the 13 steps of total enlightenment. The stupa was renovated in 2010 and the tower was repainted using 20 kg of gold.

• The nose, like a question mark (Nepali number 1, Ek), represents the unity of all things.

In the center of the base of the stupa, in four different directions, are statues of the five Dhyani Buddhas representing the five cosmic elements (earth, water, ether, air and fire) ~ Akshobhya (water), Ratnasambhava (earth), Amitabha (fire. ), Amoghasiddhi (air) and Vairocana (ether) ~ and their wives.

There are many idols, shrines and temples in Swayambhu. Here are some notable structures you will see around the stupa:

Located northwest of the Stupa, the Harati Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Harati, the goddess of smallpox and protector of all children.

Shantipur is a mysterious temple known to harbor a secret underground that is always locked. Only Buddhacharya priests are allowed in the temple.

Century, the tantric master “Shantikar Acharya” locked himself in the basement below the temple and eventually achieved immortality. Devotees believe that Shantikar is still alive and meditating there. In 1658, King Pratap Malla went to the underground chamber to seek help to end the drought in Kathmandu. After entering many terrifying underground chambers, the king finally found Shantikar, who gave him a mandala. The king left the temple as soon as he left the temple where it started to rain.

Nagpur is a small tank dedicated to Naga, the snake god. The image of the snake can be seen at the bottom of the tank when there is no water.

Pratapur and Anantapur are two tall white shikar style temples built by King Pratap Malla in 1646. These two Shikara temples are dedicated to King Pratap Malla himself and his wife Ananta Priya.

Vasundhara Mandir is a temple dedicated to Vasundhara, the Buddhist goddess of wealth, prosperity and abundance, who is often compared to Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth.

Agam House, also known as Aagan Chhen, is a retreat for Buddhacharya priests and their families.

To the northwest of the stupa, behind the court of small chaityas, is a black statue of Dipankara, also known as the “Light Buddha”, one of the ancient Buddhas who attained enlightenment before Gautama Buddha. The beautiful picture starts at 7

At the top of the Stupa’s eastern steps is a giant golden Vajra, the Great Lightning, also known as Dorje. Decorated with the animal symbols of the Tibetan zodiac, Vajra represents the power of enlightenment and is indestructible.

Not many people seem to see this little museum. However, there are two compelling reasons to visit: 1) You’ll find many rare Buddha statues in the museum, including a beautiful sleeping Buddha statue, 2) It’s free!

If you really want to meet Swayambhu the right way, you have to follow the pilgrims and climb the 365 steps that lead to the top of the hill and the stupa. It’s a good way. Plus, there’s plenty to see on the way to Swayambhu Stupa (such as the beautiful seated Buddha statues at the bottom of the eastern steps).

However, if you want to avoid the stairs, you can reach the upper west entrance directly by car.

This is one of the best reasons to visit Swayambhu. Try to come early in the morning for sunrise or in the evening for sunset. The panorama of the Kathmandu Valley is simply amazing!

The World Peace Pond is located west of the Swayambhunath Stupa. In the middle of the lake stands a Buddha statue standing on a lotus flower. According to tradition, if you throw money into the Peace Pool and your money lands in a metal bucket, your wish will come true.

Watch the monkeys dive, swim and play in the water tank reserved for bathing. The Monkey Pool is a cool (and fun!) sight!

The Karma Raja Maha Vihar Monastery, located north of the Swayambhu Stupa, was badly damaged in the April 2015 earthquake and is still being rebuilt at the time of writing.

Part of the Karma Raja Maha Vihar Monastery, the Karma Kagyu Lineage Monastery is one of the most important schools of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the oldest schools in the Kagyu tradition.

Dewa Dharma Monastery is worth a visit for its bronze Buddha icon and traditional Tibetan paintings.

The beautiful Whochen Thokjay Monastery in the northern part of the site is worth a visit.

Located at the foot of Mount Swayambhu, Buddha Amideva Park was built in 2003 and is known for its three large golden statues depicting Shakyamuni Buddha, Chenrezig and Guru Rinpoche.

Swayambhunath is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites and perhaps the most popular attraction in Kathmandu; it’s no surprise that the place is often crowded with locals and tourists alike.

Best time to visit Swayambhunath is morning and evening. Swayambhu is one of the best places in Kathmandu to watch the sunrise and sunset over the Kathmandu valley.
